A Brief Introduction to Identity Theft
By Brad | May 8, 2009
The crime of ID theft is a criminal offense that involves a thief stealing very important documents belonging to another person such as a birth certificate or a Social Security number. If an identity thief is able to obtain such vital data, they are able to pretend to be someone else. Stolen information may be used to get money, services or goods under a victim’s name, which is a reason you should use identity theft protection service.
Immigration or some other activity can occur in situations where an identity thief has been supplied with fictitious documents by means of identity theft. A big problem with ID theft is that a lot of the time, offenses committed by a criminal are usually blamed on the person who had been victimized.
Two kinds of identity theft are true name identity theft and account takeover. In the case of true name identity theft, the person stealing the identity uses someone else’s personal data in order to get new accounts. It could either be a checking account to get blank checks, new charge card account or a mobile phone service.
Account takeover is a type of happening where an identity thief uses personal data that has been stolen and is used to get entry to someone else’s financial accounts. Many times, the criminal will use the stolen information to be able to buy more goods and at the same time changes the billing address of the victim so that the victim never sees the bills with fraudulent charges.
Since no true confirmation is being made when making a purchase online, thieves have found that it is easy to buy items online. All they need is only the credit card information and they are on their way. This is yet another reason to use a protection against identity theft.
There are identity thieves that hack databases to get personal information. ID theft of this kind, however, is not frequently done unlike the old techniques such as looking at a person while making a financial dealing or rummaging through the trash for some receipts.
Always be aware when filling out long application forms at the DMV or other locations. There are criminals waiting to obtain your private data which often times results in identity theft. Use a identity fraud protection product and protect your identity today!
