Examples of How Video Surveillance Catches Criminals and Terrorists

It’s not news video surveillance is used widely around the world. While it was once only used in homes of paranoid citizens, it is now used in millions of residences, businesses, airports, schools and government buildings. Video surveillance is ideal for catching criminal acts and terrorists, before and after crime occurs.

Here are some examples of how video surveillance catches criminals and terrorists:

1. Many businesses are able to have monitored video surveillance systems which are viewed continuously by in-store security teams. This allows them to immediately see criminal activity, as it’s occurring. When activity is suspected, the security team can often catch the criminal before they leave the store or in the parking lot.

2. Many government buildings and airports use video (much more frequently after September 11 attacks in New York City). They often use them to target those who look like suspected terrorists. While some feel this is a violation of rights, others understand the importance and have seen this deter terrorist activity.

3. If a homeowner tapes someone breaking into their home, the footage can often be used by police as evidence against the criminal. Thus, they may be able to catch the thief more quickly. In addition, the homeowner’s insurance company will be able to see the home was indeed damaged.

4. Schools are using video surveillance to monitor student activity. They are watching for mischief (smoking, skipping school, fighting) most often. They can also use footage to monitor everyone visiting the building, which can help them keep campuses safe.
